About HBCU Data Science Consortium

The HBCU Data Science Consortium is a non-profit organization that aims to create a community of data science professionals from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The Consortium seeks to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of data science by providing resources, networking opportunities, and professional development to HBCU students, faculty, and alumni.

Project Goals and Objectives

We want to build a network of HBCU researchers focused on development of resources, collaborations and initiatives centered around data science. We want to increase possibility of securing funding and research awards in data science by HBCU Consortium members. To achieve these goals, we have outlined a series of strategic objectives designed to foster collaboration, build resources, and support the HBCU community in advancing data science research and education. These are:

  • Building on National as well as The South Big Data Hub initiatives to define data science.
  • Developing a continual network of data science, data analytics and/or business analytics researchers at HBCUs for sharing of best practices and making future collaborations.
  • Developing a repository of resources (data sources, curricula and associated degree proposals, scholarly articles, etc), to be shared among the HBCU community for use in future research and teaching collaborations.
  • Providing resources and support for HBCU data science programs.
  • Offering professional development opportunities to HBCU faculty and students.
  • Creating a network of data science professionals from HBCUs and beyond.
  • Encouraging and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in data science.

Project Purpose

In alignment with the South Big Data Innovation Hub program’s goals of promoting collaboration and supporting the cross-pollination of tools, data, and ideas across disciplines and sectors, an HBCU Data Science Consortium (HBCU-DSC) is being proposed. This Consortium seeks to provide an accessible and beneficial platform within the HBCU community that will promote collaboration and support the “cross-pollination” of data analysis tools, data, and ideas across the HBCU community, which is overwhelmingly located in the southern region.

Mission

The mission of the HBCU Data Science Consortium is to empower HBCU students, faculty, and alumni to become leaders in data science and related fields. The Consortium seeks to achieve this mission by providing access to resources, opportunities, and a community of like-minded professionals.

Vision

The vision of the HBCU Data Science Consortium is to become a leading organization in the field of data science that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Consortium aims to create a pipeline of students who are equipped to solve complex problems and make a positive impact in their communities.
